Opportunities for Member Input

Committee Volunteers

SPR is currently seeking volunteers for the 2022-2023 year.

The leadership has implemented policies in an effort to increase volunteer opportunities. Be sure to read the bulleted list below before volunteering to serve. If you are unsure of your eligibility, contact your committee chair or the SPR office at spr@acr.org.

  1. Any SPR member (including trainees) may serve on up to two clinical committees at any given time. Exceptions are made for members who are appointed as mandated by the Society bylaws or finishing out a current term.
  2. A member can only serve as the chair of one clinical committee at any given time. The same applies to the vice-chair position. NOTE: At the beginning of new terms, vice-chairs are strongly considered for promotion to chair positions; an automatic appointment is not guaranteed.
  3. In general, there is no maximum set number of serving members for clinical committees, but each committee will have at least six members as mandated by the bylaws. However, the leadership will monitor the size of committees to ensure that they are manageable with active participation. Please do not let this deter you from volunteering now or in the future.
  4. Unless indicated in one’s appointment email, clinical committee terms are for up to two (2) consecutive years. Subsequent terms require reappointment and are at the discretion of the leadership; this is an exception, not the rule.

If interested, complete the ONLINE VOLUNTEER FORM HERE by Monday, April 4, 2022, to be included in the appointment review cycle.  Appointment emails will be distributed by the end of June 2022.

Topic-Focused Courses

Topic-focused courses will offer either a live online or in-person education experience. Hybrid formats of activities will NOT be considered.

Proposals must be submitted by August 15, 2022.

The Board values innovation and ideas from its members and committees that enhance education and the practice of pediatric radiology. For the 2024 year, the Board will continue with its formalized process by which proposals for educational activities are reviewed for consideration of presentation.

The Call:

You are invited to submit a topic-focused course proposal for the 2024 calendar year. There are current openings for:

  • Spring - January or February 2024
  • Fall - September or October 2024

All proposals must be submitted via the online Educational Activity Application form. To familiarize yourself with application, it is accessible for download (here), but again, final submissions are to be remitted online (here). Note: the online form must be completed in one sitting. Therefore, when completing the form, in addition to the items required within the form, please be mindful that there are also 2 templates that will need to be submitted within the application.

  • Proposed budget (template here)
  • Proposed program with speakers (template here) Note: The speakers do not have to be confirmed at the time of submissions.  Also, if selected, the Committee or Board of Directors may recommend amendments (e.g., topic or speaker suggestions, or the duration of the).  

The Process:

  • The SPR Education-Curriculum Committee is charged with reviewing all applications and making a recommendation to the Board.
  • The Board will review all proposals and schedule them in accordance with the Society’s overall educational portfolio.
  • Suppose you or your committee submitted an application that was not previously approved, and you wish to resubmit your application for further consideration. In that case, you may resubmit the proposal via the form mentioned above. This will ensure that your submission is complete based on the current application process.

Things to Consider:

  • The SPR Education-Curriculum Committee is committed to introducing a wide variety of delivery options in its educational content and incorporating a diverse and inclusive group of speakers/educators representing the SPR educational efforts. Please consider all aspects of speaker diversification, including but not limited to practice type, institution, geographic location, gender, and race. To this end, liaisons from the SPR DEI Committee serve to assist the Education-Curriculum Committee in ensuring proposed programs address diversification
  • Please consider including all pediatric ages in your program, including fetal and neonatal, when applicable.
  • If proposing an activity heavy on advanced imaging techniques, please ensure that correlation is made to commonly-used imaging techniques (radiography, US). It is best to emphasize the complementary information gained by integrated imaging.
  • If this application is for a course that the SPR has previously sponsored, please detail how the proposed programming improves upon, extends, or changes the prior program. Incorporate prior program evaluations as appropriate.
  • Be creative. Topic-focused does not equate to clinical only. The Committee will consider all topics and delivery formats conducive to live online learning via the Zoom Meeting platform and in-person meetings.

The award is given to an individual whose work has had a significant impact on the way pediatric radiology is practiced or perceived. The award is given to recognize early and significant contributions to our specialty and Society.

Singleton-Taybi Award

The Singleton-Taybi Award is Awarded annually by the SPR to recognize the lifetime achievements of an SPR member in academic pediatric radiology.  The awardee may be recognized for achievements in teaching/education, research, service, outreach, leadership/administration or any combination thereof. Prior to 2020, the award focused solely on education.  Beginning in 2020, the award recognizes broader and more diverse contributions to academic pediatric radiology.

Nominating Committee

Submission Deadlines

The submission process for the 2023-2024 Board Slate has closed. 
The nomination process for the 2023-2024 Nominating Committee will open this winter.

Nominations for Officers and Board Members

The SPR Nominating Committee calls for candidates for the following positions:

  • Second Vice-President: One open position with a one-year term (6/1/2023-5/31/2024). The elected member will continue to ascend within the SPR leadership (First Vice-President, President-Elect, President, and Board Chair), with each position assigned a one-year term. 
    • The elected member will preside over SPR 2027.
    • NOTICE: The elected member will also serve as the SPR Research and Education Foundation President for a three-year term (6/1/2023-5/31/2026).
  • Director, SPR Board: Two open positions, with each person serving a three-year term (6/1/2023-5/31/2026)
  • Member, SPR REF Board: Two open positions, each with a three-year term (6/1/2023-5/31/2026).

Note: The Treasurer-Elect position for the SPR and SPR REF Boards will open next fall, realigning its term of service with the Secretary-Elect role, which will also be open next year.

SPR members in good standing who are interested in being considered for an SPR or SPR REF Board position must complete the online interest form (here). 

Please note that forms must be submitted by the member interested in serving, forms submitted on behalf of someone will NOT be accepted.

The form must be completed in one sitting.  Therefore, it is recommended that you review the PDF version (here) in advance to prepare for online submission. 

Candidates are also encouraged to review and understand the expectations of the SPR and SPR REF leadership and be prepared to uphold the Society’s statements, bylaws, and code of conduct if elected to serve. (See page 3 of Nominating Guide.)

  • Letters of recommendation are NOT required and should NOT be furnished. 
  • Each candidate will be required to submit an abbreviated version (up to 2 pages) of their CV – i.e., only the salient information supporting the position(s) for which they wish to be considered.  The Nominating Committee will only review 2 pages per submission, so please do NOT upload your entire CV.   
  • As mentioned above, only the person interested in serving should submit an interest form.  Forms submitted on behalf of someone will NOT be accepted.

The instructions from the 2022-2023 process are below for reference purposes only. They are subject to change for the 2023-2024 leadership year. 

SPR members who wish to stand for consideration, please read the details below.  

Consider influencing the future of the Society by running for election to the SPR Nominating Committee.  Three (3) elected members will be selected by the membership to serve on the Nominating Committee.  Each year, the Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying eligible members in good standing to the Board of Directors as candidates for elected offices. Self-nominations are also encouraged. Before putting your name forward or encouraging a fellow member to do so, please review the following:

  • SPR Active, Allied, Emeritus, and Honorary Members are eligible for consideration.
  • A person may only serve on the Nominating Committee once during their tenure as an SPR member. Note: the SPR Board Chair is exempt from this rule when the person serves as the committee chair. The President* is also exempt from this rule when the person serves as an ex-officio, non-voting member.
  • Candidates from the same institution as the continuing elected Nominating Committee members (not including the chair or president) are NOT eligible for positions on the slate. This criterion is enforced to diversify the Nominating Committee and eliminate multiple recusals during deliberations. View the Nominating Committee roster here.
  • Candidates with five or more years of membership in the Society are preferred. The benchmark will help compose a Nominating Committee of members with Society knowledge.

Note: The elected members will be required to adhere to the rules and policies of the Society. Elected members of the Nominating Committee must participate in all meetings. Given the responsibility of the Nominating Committee, exceptions cannot be made.

  • Members of the SPR Board of Directors and Judiciary Committee are not eligible to serve. Exception: Dr. David Larson’s and Dr. Roni Rooks’ board terms will conclude on May 31, 2022. They are eligible for consideration.

NIH: Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) Initiative

Regarding NIBIB and opportunities with the RADx initiative:

NIBIB expects to receive between 200-500 inquiries. translating to roughly 100 applications and, down the line, roughly five “outstanding, promising” approaches that the NIH could move to commercialize. The project is focused only on tests to diagnose Covid-19 in patients who are currently sick, not on serological tests that determine whether an individual carries antibodies that indicate they were previously infected with coronavirus.

The existing NIH-sponsored diagnostic development centers (POCTRN) will evaluate proposals and pair approved teams with experts in technology, regulatory approval, commercialization, and manufacturing to speed their progress. Proposals can use any technology to detect an active infection and will be evaluated for their likely success in improving testing performance—qualities such as speed, reliability, and accuracy—and ease of use, such as detecting the virus in saliva or exhaled breath.

Research Relief

Sharing information from The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research

RESEARCH RELIEF TODAY! 

Tell Congress to provide research relief for laboratories.

Congress is currently negotiating the next package to provide economic relief from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Although this will be a massive funding effort, it does not currently include relief for biomedical research facilities that were slowed or shuttered in response to the pandemic. It is imperative that you make your elected leaders aware of this omission and urge them to include support the National Institutes of Health in the forthcoming package.
 
Below is our "Take Action" button that will lead you to a recommended letter and tweet that you are encouraged to personalize with your own story of pandemic-related impacts to your research—note there are placeholders for you to insert your own story, and we certainly encourage you to do so. In addition, the Academy is working with our coalition partners and will be contacting Capitol Hill as well.
